An atmosphere of Lady Gaga and Kanye West allowed someone as outlandish as Azealia Banks to thrive in the music industry today. Banks just released her mixtape, “Fantasea,” which turns out to be one of the best releases this year.
The new record is bold, daring and manic. She had the ego of a well-seasoned music legend but with a new sound that holds a listener’s attention. Using older samples and still sounding fresh and modern is hard to do, but Banks’ exceeds expectations. And while she may not refer to herself as a “rapper” any longer, she’s still opening doors for more female MCs like her to come through.
